Chickpea, scientifically known as Cicer arietinum, derives its name from the Latin word “cicer,” which refers to the legume plant family, Fabaceae. It is also commonly known as garbanzo bean, a name derived from Spanish. Within the legume family, chickpeas are closely related to other familiar foods such as kidney beans, black beans, lima beans, and peanuts.
Chickpea plants produce edible seeds, known as pulses, which are highly nutritious. There are two main varieties of chickpeas: the larger round light-colored Kabuli-type, commonly found in the United States, and the smaller dark irregularly shaped Desi-type, which is often used in India and the Middle East.
Garbanzo beans, also known as Kabuli chana, are characterized by their lighter color, larger size, and smoother coat. They are primarily cultivated in regions such as the Mediterranean, Southern Europe, Northern Africa, South America, and the Indian subcontinent. The term “Kabuli chana” translates to “from Kabul” in Hindi, as this variety was believed to have originated from Kabul, Afghanistan, when it was introduced to India in the 18th century.
